Have you ever had anyone ask you, "How did you get into that particular industry?" I sure have, and sometimes our plans take us into a totally different direction in life.
I have been in the gifting industry since 2014. Prior to that, I was in the world of "Corporate America.” I lived in Atlanta and had been in the international air cargo (heavy airfreight) logistics industry for almost 25 years. I worked my way up from an Administrative Assistant to the Southeast Regional Sales Manager, working for a cargo airline that flew between Miami and Latin America.
After working there 12 years, a large, well-known logistics provider purchased our company. My title changed from Regional Sales Manager to Account Executive but, basically, my job duties of traveling throughout the Southeast U.S. and visiting my client base remained the same. I loved my clients and the industry, so I stayed on for another 10 years after the acquisition.
Fast forward to 2010. I married a fabulous guy and relocated to Houston. I worked in the air cargo logistics industry for another year and a half, but with major life changes of marriage and relocating, I was ready for a career change.
After leaving the air cargo logistics industry, I worked for a terrific local trade show company for 2 years, gaining and learning many valuable skills. But something still stirred in me - a longing for my own business, one where I could be creative working with my hands. So, in 2014, I started researching different industries. During my search, I came across gift baskets. "How fitting!" I thought. An industry that evolves around creativity and relationship building, which, during my sales career, was something I highly valued. I did my research and then took the plunge! I took several classes and attended several networking groups. Through a networking group, I met another Gift Designer with 20+ years in the industry. She has been invaluable in her mentorship and helping me to hone my skills in crafting beautiful, thoughtful and high quality gifts. After several months, I left my job at the tradeshow company and went full-time into building my business.
In 2016, I opened a brick-and-mortar gift shop north of Houston. It was a wonderful experience and I treasured each of my clients that supported me. However, the world of retail is ever-evolving and after a year and a half, I had to make the hard decision to close the gift shop.
I am now happily concentrating on the core of my business - creating and providing beautiful gifts that celebrate life's everyday occasions. I am thankful for this "gift", the opportunity to do what I truly love, being creative and building relationships with the art of gifting.
So, how did I get here? I believe it was God's plan all along.
Blessings to you!
